What Is AAUW ?

Founded in 1881, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a dynamic organization designed to encourage and support educational opportunities for women and girls. Its membership, more than 165,000 nationwide, is open to all college and university graduates nationwide, who hold the baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. As of June 2005, AAUW voted to expand membership to women who hold an AA Degree or its equivalent. AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There are no barriers to full participation in the organization on the basis of gender, race, age, creed, sexual orientation, national origin or disability.

The oldest and largest national organization working for the advancement of women, AAUW has three primary divisions at the national level. The Association develops policies to promote general education and the improvement of education at all levels. The Educational Foundation administers funds that have been raised by over 1,000 branches. It directs them to American and International Fellowships and grants for research and projects. The Legal Advocacy Fund provides financial help and a support system for women in academia who are currently struggling to overcome prejudices in higher education and employment.
