Nikki Lyer, 2023 SJHHS Scholarship RecipientThe High School Scholarship committee of Arlene Hecht, Jeannette Pease, Teress Weber and Audie Sturla selected Monica “Nikki” Lyer as the recipient of the 2023 AAUW San Juan Hills High School Scholarship. This is a $2,000 scholarship and will be used by Nikki as she furthers her education. Nikki plans to major in Journalism, Political Science/Political Economy and plans to attend the University of California, Berkeley. Nikki’s application essay addressed her success as a non-native speaker in AP Spanish Language and Literature courses, her interest in Political Economy as it relates to being a political correspondent, and her activities as the Co-Editor-In-Chief of the school newspaper. Nikki is ranked in the first decile academically and achieved the Superintendents/Principals Honor Roll every semester starting in the 9th grade and is a member of the National Honor Society. In addition to her academic achievement and school publication activities, Nikki is an active participant in the Orange County Debate League, team captain of the school dance team, and has volunteered or interned for several election campaigns in the local community. This is the eleventh year our Branch has presented a scholarship to an outstanding senior woman from San Juan Hills High School. This all started with a gift from Doris E. Edwards, a “friend” of AAUW. Her gift funded the first four years and member donations have continued to fund the scholarship. So, a BIG THANK YOU to all our members. We look forward to your con-tinued support of this important scholarship.
