AAUW SCCB Branch Members Meet SBC Student Club

Submitted by Lori Cincotta, College/University Partnership Liaison to SBC

On May 2nd our Saddleback College (SBC) AAUW Student Club held their first program on campus. It was a panel discussion concerning ‘Women in STEM: Challenges and Possibilities’. It was expertly moderated by the club president, and the vice president, an international student studying Computer Science, was also on the panel. Other panel members were SBC Chair/Professor April Cubbage of Gender and Sexuality Studies and Nicole James, a Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft. They provided invaluable insight into the challenges women face in the STEM fields. They all provided positive guidance and shared hopes for the possibilities of women studying/working in the STEM fields. Attendees were captivated by the discussions and actively engaged in the Q&A session. 29 attendees consisting of students, professors, family members, AAUW SCCB members, Marcia Milchiker, President Board of Trustees Community Colleges & MV member, and Donna Lily, Chair of AAUW California College & University.

The SBC AAUW Student Club is looking forward to hosting future events focusing on pertinent women’s issues. The next adventure for these ‘college women student leaders’ is attending our National Leadership Conference at University of Maryland May 31st – June 3rd. We have 5 students representing SBC with each receiving national scholarships to assist with conference fees. Be ready to hear about their experiences at the June 10th meeting.
